When there is an emergency, some dogs can put on their invisible capes and become silent heroes. Whoever gets into trouble, be it human or other animals, they won’t think twice about helping anyone in need. And often, by doing so, they are able to develop some unexpected friendships.
One furry hero named Rex experienced just that when he, along with his owner Ed Gernon, saved a tiny hummingbird. Rex, who was once rescued from the shelter, knew precisely the feeling of being helpless. So when he was adopted by Ed and gave him a forever home, he thought of sharing some of that good luck with the animals around him, even with a little bird.
Ed and Rex were out one day, walking around their California neighborhood. While on their walk, Rex sniffed the surrounding areas and ground. And that’s when he discovered a tiny hummingbird lying on the ground, completely motionless.
At first look, Ed assumed that the little bird was already dead since she was covered in ants and no longer had some of her feathers. But, Rex sensed that it was the complete opposite. Although the tiny creature was severely injured and in desperate need of help, he knew that it was still alive.
Rex couldn’t just leave the poor helpless hummingbird behind, so Ed had no choice but to take her along with them. Eventually, the little bird began healing from her wounds. And several weeks later, she was back on her full health—her feathers started to grow, and she was able to fly again.
The tiny hummingbird, who was later named Hummer, could not thank Rex enough for saving her life. So even though she could already fly again, she wouldn’t leave Rex behind. Ever since that day, Rex and Hummer became the best of friends and were inseparable.
