In Dallas, Texas, Rocco, a 3-year-old German Shepherd was abandoned by his owners at the Dallas Animal Services as soon as they found out that they were going to have a baby. Poor Rocco stayed at the back part of his kennel while cowering and shaking in fear.
Since it was Rocco’s first time at the Dallas Animal Services, the unfamiliar people, smell, and sound that the shelter gave off stressed him so much. Each time Rocco tried looking up to anyone who passed by his kennel, his sad eyes looked as if he was asking why he was there.
One fateful day, a woman who visited the shelter noticed Rocco trembling in fear, so she took a video of the dog and posted it online. She hoped that what she did would bring the dog closer to its fur-ever home.
Luckily, Preethi Pillaipakkam, one of the foster parents of DFW German Shepherd Rescue, saw Rocco’s video online, so she rushed to the facility to save Rocco. Preethi told The Dodo that the shelter is not a place for someone like Rocco.
Preethi saw how timid Rocco was. He was so scared of getting inside her car, and when Rocco did, he immediately hid under the seat of her car.
Aside from pacing a bit and feeling extremely anxious, Rocco was also underweight. He weighed only 60 pounds when his weight should have been somewhere between 85 to 90 pounds.
When Preethi took Rocco into her home, the dog had a hard time relaxing because of how confused and lost he was of his new surroundings. Fortunately, Preethi also had a German Shepherd in her home, which helped Rocco slowly adjust to his new environment.
Once Rocco understood that he was safe, he became Preethi’s shadow, and if he is not busy following Preethi around the house, he is playing with his squeaky toys. After spending a couple of weeks under Preethi’s care, Rocco got adopted and is now living happily with his new family.
